Catch And Tame Pen Optimization Guide

How to squeeze the most income per pen slot in Catch And Tame: replacement thresholds, when to buy slots instead of lassos, and which animals never deserve a slot.

Slots are multiplicative, animals are additive

Pen income is a plain sum of the per-second rates of the animals inside it. Six top-tier animals — $42, $34, $31, $29, $27 and $26 — produce about $189/sec. Nothing in that sum multiplies, which has one important consequence: buying a slot raises your ceiling permanently, while catching one animal only fills a ceiling you already own.

So the correct question at every decision point is whether your existing slots are full of the best animals you can currently catch. If they are, buy slots. If they are not, go catch.

Replacement thresholds

Use these as swap triggers. When you can reliably catch the animal on the right, the animal on the left should not hold a slot.

  • Chicken ($3) → any Rare, immediately
  • Dog ($4) and Goat ($5) → Koala ($16) or any Rare
  • Wolf ($11), Zebra ($12), Kangaroo ($12) → Lion ($18) or Tiger ($19)
  • Bear ($13) → keep one as a breeding parent, replace the rest
  • Koala ($16), Leopard ($17) → Rhino ($24) or Moon Cat ($22)
  • Rhino ($24), Yeti ($26) → Red Panda ($29) or better, but keep Yeti for breeding

Two slots are never for income

Reserve one slot for a breeding parent you cannot easily re-catch, and one as working space for pairings. Yeti is the obvious permanent resident: it parents both Kitsune and Red Panda. Lightning Dragon is the second, feeding both the Hydra and Cosmic Griffin lines.

A pen that is 100% optimised for income cannot breed, and breeding is how you obtain the animals that beat anything you can catch.

Feeding, luck and why it is not an income stat

Feeding animals raises luck, and luck affects what you encounter on routes — not what your pen pays. Treat food items from codes as route fuel, not pen fuel. Steaks, Bones, Cookie Buttons and event items are best spent before a hunt for a target you actually need, usually a Legendary breeding parent.

A worked example

Suppose you hold six slots with Goat, Goat, Wolf, Bear, Koala, Lion: 5 + 5 + 11 + 13 + 16 + 18 = $68/sec. Swapping both Goats for a second Koala and a Tiger gives 16 + 19 + 11 + 13 + 16 + 18 = $93/sec, a 37% raise from two catches you can already make.

Now drop the Wolf for a Rhino and keep the Bear for breeding: 16 + 19 + 24 + 13 + 16 + 18 = $106/sec. The same six slots, no purchases, 56% more income than where you started.

Questions about this guide

+Should I buy pen slots or a better lasso first?

Lasso first while your slots still hold Commons — a better lasso raises what you can catch. Once every slot holds the best animal you can reliably catch, buy slots.

+How many animals fit in a pen?

Slot count grows through pen upgrades. Because income is additive per slot, expansions are the only purchase that raises your income ceiling rather than filling it.

+Does feeding animals increase income?

No. Feeding raises luck, which affects what you find on routes. Income per animal is fixed by the animal itself.
